Iraq Welcomes Start of PKK Disarmament Process
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Iraq’s official news agency (INA), Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement welcoming the launch of the disarmament process for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The statement noted that initial steps began on Friday near Sulaymaniyah province in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. This move follows a prior commitment by the PKK to end armed activities after more than four decades of conflict.
The Ministry described this development as a notable milestone toward disarmament. It called it a genuine opportunity to strengthen stability,break the cycle of violence,and open new prospects for understanding and peaceful coexistence in the region.
The statement emphasized that the Iraqi government fully supports this process, viewing it as a step toward initiating a new phase of constructive cooperation with Turkey.This partnership aims at joint efforts to address security challenges and consequently enhance sovereignty and stability for both nations.
Iraq’s Ministry expressed hope that this initiative will help reduce political, security, and social tensions in the region. It also sees it as a starting point for resolving deep-rooted crises while promoting security and development benefiting all peoples in the area.
Notably, news sources reported on Friday that the military wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party officially began surrendering its weapons during an organized ceremony.
