Axios: Europeans Inform Rubio About Triggering the Snapback Mechanism
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Axios reported based on three informed sources that the foreign ministers of Germany, the United Kingdom, and France, together with the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, informed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken that they are beginning to activate the snapback mechanism against Iran as of today.
Axios explained that snapback refers to reinstating all United Nations Security Council sanctions on Iran which had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement.Iranian officials have warned that activating this mechanism would lead Tehran to withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The report states that France, Germany, and Britain gave Iran until August 31 to take steps regarding its nuclear program and avoid triggering snapback. The U.S. department of state has declined to comment on this advancement.
axios also wrote that Europeans have urged Iran to resume negotiations with Washington toward a new nuclear deal and allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors full access to what is described as stocks of uranium enriched up to 60 percent.
The American outlet claimed Tuesday’s talks between senior Iranian and European diplomats concluded without concrete outcomes or tangible proposals from Tehran. A source familiar with these discussions said iranian officials “offered no concrete, precise or verifiable proposals,” effectively closing off any extension possibility for delaying snapback activation and paving the way for renewed sanctions enforcement.
An anonymous European diplomat explained Brussels’ decision by asserting that ”the troika leaders believe Iran has clearly violated its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal for years without taking substantial corrective actions.” This claim comes despite Washington’s unilateral and illegal withdrawal from JCPOA in 2018.
The activation process will last thirty days. The Europeans aim to complete it before Russia assumes its rotating presidency over the Security Council in October.
Another European diplomat stated: “Initiating snapback does not mean diplomacy ends; these three countries still welcome engagement with Iran in upcoming weeks before UN sanctions come into effect.”
