Reuters: Syria and Israel to Sign Security Agreement
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Reuters has reported based on informed sources that the Syrian regime under Abu Muhammad al-Julani is accelerating negotiations with Tel Aviv for a security agreement under US pressure.
Syria has entered the talks hoping that this deal will lead to reclaiming territory recently occupied by Israel. However, reuters predicts the agreement will fall short of a extensive peace treaty.
Several sources told Reuters that Washington is intensifying efforts to advance negotiations before the United Nations General Assembly convenes, aiming to announce the security deal at this forum.
The report states that even reaching an interim agreement would be considered a success for then-President Trump. This follows months of tough stances by Israeli negotiators, while al-Julani’s authority, weakened particularly after sectarian clashes in Sweida and Israeli military interventions during talks, has approached from a position of vulnerability.
According to sources including Syrian military and political officials, two intelligence contacts, and an Israeli political figure cited by reuters, Syria’s proposal centers on withdrawing Israeli forces from occupied areas seized in recent months. It also calls for restoring the demilitarized buffer zone established in the 1974 ceasefire and ending Israeli airstrikes and ground incursions into syria.
The sources added that talks have not addressed control over the Golan Heights-occupied by Israel as 1967-which a knowledgeable Syrian source said would remain an unresolved issue for the future. Meanwhile, an Israeli source indicated Tel Aviv does not intend to make major concessions in this deal.
