U.S. Threatens to Cut IAEA Funding if Iran Resolution Passes
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, reported that Al-Mayadeen released an exclusive report today from Vienna indicating that the United States has warned most member states not to support the resolution prohibiting attacks on nuclear sites.
The report added that Washington threatened to halt funding for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and potentially withdraw from the agency if the resolution passes.
Al-Mayadeen previously revealed it had obtained a draft resolution calling for a prohibition against attacks or threats of attack on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.
This resolution is scheduled for a vote today at the 69th annual General Conference of IAEA member states in Vienna.
The resolution was jointly submitted by Iran, China, Russia, Belarus, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. It highlights several key points in its text.
According to Al-Mayadeen’s report, the draft reaffirms “the General Conference’s emphasis on fully and effectively realizing the objectives of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” especially its legal mandate “to promote and expand peaceful uses of nuclear energy worldwide” for peace, health, and welfare.
The draft also reiterates every country’s legitimate right to pursue research, production, and peaceful use of nuclear energy without discrimination.
The document recalls UN Security Council Resolution 487 (1981), which condemned military attacks on nuclear installations as clear violations of both the UN Charter and international law. it emphasizes again “the necessity to refrain from such unlawful acts.”
