Ukraine Awaits a Miracle; Zelensky to Meet Trump Today
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Reuters reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, respectively the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, will meet and hold talks today during the UN General Assembly.
Trump will deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly today-the first since returning to the White House and issuing executive orders aimed at reducing America’s role in international institutions.
This meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy follows trump’s August visit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two met on August 15 in Alaska; this encounter ended Moscow’s isolation in Western circles but produced no progress on Ukraine.
In recent months, Russia has not only intensified its large-scale attacks against Ukraine but also heightened Western concerns by sending drones alleged to be Moscow’s into NATO airspace over Poland, Estonia, and Romania.
Mike Walts, newly appointed US ambassador to the United Nations, expressed solidarity regarding NATO airspace violations. He affirmed that “the US and its allies will defend every inch of NATO territory.”
During his 2024 presidential campaign-and after winning-the former president repeatedly claimed he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. Though,last week he admitted being genuinely disappointed by Putin’s actions.
Reuters expects Zelenskyy to press Trump during thier meeting for a firmer stance against Russia and for imposing new sanctions. It is likely that Zelenskyy will address the UN General Assembly tomorrow.
Last week US Secretary of state Marco Rubio outlined upcoming talks between Trump and Zelenskyy. Rubio claimed that “the US president is not ready to apply pressure on Putin” and asserted that “if he [Trump] is not involved, ther is no one else worldwide capable of mediating a potential resolution to the Ukraine conflict.”
According to AFP, Zelenskyy must again exercise caution in dealing with Trump. on February 28 during a controversial White House meeting alongside his deputy JD Vance, Trump harshly humiliated Zelenskyy-accusing him of ingratitude for American military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv.
