Kalas: Diplomacy Is the Only Solution to Iran’s Nuclear Issue
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and the official EU website, Kaja Kallas, the EU’s political affairs chief, addressed Iran during the EU-Gulf Cooperation Council summit in Kuwait. She once again claimed that despite the reimposition of UN sanctions on Tehran, channels for negotiation and diplomacy with the Islamic Republic remain open.
At this summit,Kallas said: “Ten years after the nuclear deal’s implementation, last week, the UN Security Council reinstated sanctions against Iran.”
She asserted: “During the 30-day period following France, Germany, and Britain’s initiation of the snapback mechanism process, we engaged in intensive diplomatic efforts with Iran. Though, these efforts did not create conditions necessary for a possible extension of related Security Council resolutions.”
Kallas’ statements regarding Troika’s diplomatic engagement with Iran come as under US pressure-and that of Europe’s Troika-the Security Council rejected a draft resolution proposed by Russia and China to extend UN Resolution 2231 for six months. this resolution had supported implementation of the nuclear deal with iran.
Tehran has declared these three European countries’ move to reinstate UN sanctions as illegal. Earlier, Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran, emphasized that Security Council Resolution 2231 must be considered terminated on its scheduled date according to its provisions and text-the equivalent Gregorian date being October 18th, 2025.
Kallas claimed: “The EU is now reimposing all previously lifted sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear program without delay. Nonetheless,” she added,”the return of sanctions and nuclear restrictions shoudl not mean an end to diplomacy. With this approach I will continue engaging all relevant parties including Iran becuase a sustainable solution to Iran’s nuclear issue can only be reached through negotiation and diplomacy.”
Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry today stressed: “Regarding their claim about keeping diplomatic channels open-yes this is generally true. We believe diplomacy should never close; we use every tool available to protect our national interests. When we judge diplomacy effective and fruitful we have no hesitation in employing it.But what Europeans have proven is that at least with these three countries-diplomacy in this form is ineffective.”
