The “Sanwar Scenario” Sparks Tel Aviv’s Fear of Palestinian Prisoner Release
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Cairo 24 news website, Western newspapers including the French daily Le Figaro reported on the recent release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. Thes reports suggest that freeing some of these detainees signals the emergence of a new Yahya Sinwar.
The first phase of a ceasefire agreement signed between Israel and Hamas took place amid Israeli opposition to releasing some key Palestinian prisoner figures. However, several others-some serving multiple life sentences-were ultimately freed.
Fear Over Prisoner Releases
An Israeli official told Hebrew-language newspaper Haaretz, “We are releasing individuals who could become another Yahya Sinwar.”
Yahya Sinwar, slain leader and head of Hamas’s political bureau in Gaza, was the chief planner behind Operation al-Aqsa Storm. He became one of Israel’s most wanted figures in Gaza. until 2011, he was held in Israeli prisons before his release as part of a prisoner exchange deal involving Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier captured by Hamas.
The official added, “These individuals are very intelligent and dangerous! We need to understand who thay are and what they can do.”
Maaroun Al-Barghouti, Abdullah Al-Barghouti, Ahmad Saadat, Hassan Salameh, Ibrahim Hamed, Iyad Abu al-Rub are among Palestinians whose release has been opposed by Israel.
