Russia’s withdrawal from Kazakhstan’s “Balkhash” anti-missile base

The contract for Russia's use of the "Balkhash" base in Kazakhstan to combat enemy missile attacks was completed with the approval of senior Russian officials.

According to the Fars news agency reporter in Astana, the contract between Russia and Kazakhstan regarding the terms of transfer and the further use of Kazakhstan’s Balkhash base in the Russian missile attack warning system has been terminated.

This unit was commissioned in 1973 and is in charge of the strategic military responsibilities of the southern airspace.

It is noted that the Russian Ministry of Defense in this region from 2014 to 2018 set up four modern radar stations of the “Varanzh” type in “Armavir”, “Orsk”, “Barnaul” and “Irkutsk”.

In this regard, it was decided to to terminate Russia’s use of the base.

In August 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law under which an agreement between Moscow and Astana to transfer the Balkhash base to Russia’s missile attack warning system will be terminated.

The Russian side explained its decision to terminate the contract as 4 new radar stations located on its own territory have been put into operation recently.

It was mentioned that radars are used as missile attack warning systems as well as for monitoring outer space.
