China: Julani Sanctions Lift Fail to Resolve All Parties’ Concerns Over Syria

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing al Jazeera via Mehr News Agency, Fu Kong, China’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United nations, abstained from voting on the resolution to lift sanctions against Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, leader of the terrorist factions controlling parts of Syria. He stated that this resolution failed to resolve legitimate concerns raised by all parties.
He added, “The supporters of this resolution did not fully consider the views of all members and compelled the Council to adopt it.”
The Chinese ambassador further noted that even amid meaningful disagreements among Security Council members, some were pushing their political agendas forward.
On thursday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution lifting sanctions on abu Muhammad al-Jolani and his Interior Minister Anas khatab.
The draft resolution, introduced by the United States at the Security Council, was adopted with 14 votes in favor and one abstention.
China is one of five permanent members of the UN security Council and cast an abstaining vote on this measure.
The lifting of sanctions on Jolani coincides with his planned visit to Washington. Earlier this week, the White House announced that U.S. President Donald Trump would meet with Al-Shar’ in Washington on Monday.
Syria’s Foreign minister Asaad Al-Shibani said that during his official trip to Washington, Al-Shar’ will discuss issues including remaining sanction relief, reconstruction efforts in Syria, and counterterrorism cooperation.
