Protests Continue in Mexico: 20 Protesters and 100 Police Injured

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and France 24, thousands marched at Zócalo, the main square in Mexico City. The demonstration involved Mexican youth connected with the wave of Generation Z protests and supporters of the “Wide-Brimmed Hat Movement,” which emerged after the recent assassination of a prominent mayor as part of a campaign against organized crime.
Agence France-Presse reported that participants of all ages gathered in front of the National Palace, home and workplace of Claudia Sheinbaum, mexico City’s mayor.
AFP journalists claimed that several protesters wearing helmets overturned metal barriers protecting the palace. They threw cobblestones at riot police, who responded with tear gas.
The palace’s security forces used tear gas grenades to control the crowd.
Pablo Vázquez, head of security for Mexico City, told reporters that 20 protesters and 100 police officers were injured. Forty officers remain hospitalized with cuts and bruises.
He added that police arrested 20 people on charges including theft and assault. Investigations are also underway regarding an attack on a journalist from La Jornada newspaper, with allegations pointing to involvement by law enforcement officers.
