In France, a Woman Dies or Faces Attempted Lethal Violence Every 7 Hours

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Qatar’s Al Jazeera network, “Miprof” (the Ministry Support Body for Women) released its 2024 annual report on Thursday, November 20, 2024. The report states that every seven hours in France, a woman is either killed, subjected to attempted murder, or driven to attempt suicide. These acts are committed by current or former partners.
This report was prepared by the national Center Against Violence Towards Women and submitted to Miprof.
Shocking Statistics
Miprof reports that every two minutes a woman falls victim to rape or an attempted rape.
The report also reveals that every 23 seconds a woman experiences harassment or inappropriate sexual behavior.
According to this data, femicides increased by 11% in 2024 compared to 2023; 107 women were killed by their current or former partners.Additionally, 270 women survived attempted murder and 906 women suffered sexual abuse from their partners leading them toward suicide attempts or actual suicides.
In total,1,283 women experienced domestic violence in 2024 compared with 1,196 in 2023.
Protests and Reactions
The French newspaper Le Monde reported that women’s organizations across France have called on people to join widespread demonstrations on Saturday, November 22. These protests will center around a “women’s strike” occurring in Paris and dozens of other cities including Lille, Lyon, La Rochelle, and Bordeaux.
The paper added that the so-called Women’s Strike coalition-comprising around sixty associations and unions dedicated to women’s rights-will oversee these marches supporting gender equality in paris.
In another controversy, Suzy Rogue-Tman-the spokesperson for the National Association for women’s Rights-stated: “Even police officers are accused of rape inside prisons in France; femicides at home continue rising; yet there remains no thorough program addressing sexual violence at universities.” She stressed: “We still need an all-encompassing plan against sexual violence and discrimination at higher education institutions.”
Women’s advocacy groups openly criticize President Emmanuel Macron’s government policies as inadequate. Despite his promise at the start of his second term in office (2022) that combating violence against women would be a cornerstone initiative during his presidency, activists see little progress.
Lack of Government Action and Oversight
The report acknowledges government measures such as helplines assistance services, electronic monitoring bracelets for perpetrators during restraining orders, and emergency aid programs have been implemented but activists argue these efforts fall short due to insufficient funding allocated toward solutions.
Le Monde highlights complaints from women’s groups about dismissed complaints filed by victims, due process failures leaving offenders unpunished, and structural dysfunctions within judicial proceedings dealing with these cases.
