In France, a Woman Dies or Faces Attempted Lethal Violence Every 7 Hours

Women’s⁤ organizations ⁤in France have raised ⁣alarms about the rising number of murders of women by current or former⁣ partners, under the‍ slogan “The time for ⁣warnings is over; it is indeed time‌ for action.”

According to the English section of ‌ webangah News⁢ Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Qatar’s⁤ Al Jazeera‌ network, “Miprof” (the Ministry ⁣Support Body for Women) released ⁢its 2024 annual report on Thursday, November 20, 2024. The report states that every ⁣seven hours in France, a ⁤woman‍ is either killed, subjected to attempted murder, or driven to attempt suicide. These acts are committed by current or ⁢former partners.

This report was prepared by the national Center Against Violence Towards Women and submitted to Miprof.

Shocking⁤ Statistics

Miprof reports that every two⁤ minutes ‌a woman falls victim to‍ rape or an attempted rape.

The ⁢report also reveals that every 23 seconds a woman experiences harassment ⁤or inappropriate sexual behavior.

According to this‌ data, femicides increased by 11% in ⁢2024 compared to 2023; 107 women were killed by their‌ current or former partners.Additionally, 270 ⁢women survived attempted murder and‌ 906 women suffered sexual abuse from their partners leading them toward suicide attempts or ‌actual suicides.

In total,1,283 women experienced domestic violence in ⁢2024 compared‍ with 1,196 in⁤ 2023.

Protests and Reactions

The French newspaper Le Monde‍ reported ⁢that women’s organizations across ⁣France have called on people to join widespread demonstrations on Saturday, November 22. These ‌protests will center around ⁢a “women’s strike” occurring in Paris and dozens of other cities including Lille,‍ Lyon, La Rochelle, and Bordeaux.

The paper added that the so-called Women’s⁢ Strike coalition-comprising around sixty associations and unions dedicated to‍ women’s rights-will oversee these marches supporting gender equality in paris.

In another controversy, Suzy Rogue-Tman-the spokesperson for the National Association for‌ women’s Rights-stated: “Even ⁣police officers are accused ‍of rape inside prisons in France; femicides at home continue rising; yet there remains ⁤no thorough program⁤ addressing sexual violence at universities.” She stressed: “We still need an all-encompassing plan against sexual violence and discrimination at higher‍ education institutions.”

Women’s ⁢advocacy groups openly criticize President Emmanuel Macron’s government policies ‍as ⁤inadequate. Despite his promise at the start of his second term in office (2022) that combating violence against women would be a cornerstone initiative during his presidency, activists see little progress.

Lack of Government Action and ⁣Oversight

The report acknowledges government measures such ⁤as helplines assistance services, electronic monitoring bracelets for perpetrators during restraining orders, and emergency⁣ aid programs have been implemented but⁤ activists argue these efforts fall short due to insufficient funding⁤ allocated⁣ toward solutions.

Le⁢ Monde highlights complaints from‍ women’s groups about dismissed complaints filed⁤ by victims, due ⁤process failures leaving ⁢offenders unpunished, and‌ structural dysfunctions within judicial proceedings dealing with these cases.
