Honduras Election Preliminary Results: Trump-Backed Candidate Leads

Preliminary results from Honduras’ presidential election show the candidate backed by the U.S.president in the lead.

According to the English ‍section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News⁤ agency and the Associated Press, early results ⁢from Honduras’ presidential‌ election indicate that two conservative party candidates are‌ ahead of the⁣ ruling party’s nominee. Vote counting covered ‌approximately ‍43 percent of precincts as of Monday ‍morning.

The National Electoral Council of ⁤honduras announced that Nasry asfura, representing the National party, leads with 40.54 percent of counted votes. salvador ‍Nasralla from the Liberal Party follows closely with about 38.99 percent.

Rixi Moncada, candidate for the leftist Liberty and Refoundation Social Democratic Party (LIBRE), holds third place with 19.49 percent.

This comes despite a pre-count poll ‌released by Honduras’ ruling party claiming victory in the presidential race before official tallies began.

The left-wing Liberty and Refoundation Party, which currently governs Honduras, published a survey stating that their candidate‍ moncada was leading in the election.

The general elections took place on Sunday, November 30. In addition to electing a president and three vice presidents, voters selected 128 members ⁤of⁢ Congress, 20 ⁤representatives to Central ⁤America’s Parliament (PARLACEN), as ‍well as 298 mayors and over 2,000 local‍ council members. Honduran law mandates a single-round presidential vote where the candidate with the moast votes wins outright.

The elections occurred amid threats from then-U.S. President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Honduras if leftist candidates⁣ prevailed at the polls.

Trump publicly supported Asfura’s⁤ right-leaning candidacy‌ in ⁣this ⁢presidential contest.
