Lebanon Appoints Envoy to Ceasefire Monitoring Committee Amid U.S.-Brokered Talks

Lebanon has appointed Simon Karam, former ambassador to Washington, as its representative to the ceasefire monitoring committee amid ongoing tensions with Israel. The decision follows U.S. efforts to mediate discussions between the two countries.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has selected Simon Karam, the nation’s former ambassador to Washington, to represent Lebanon at a forthcoming meeting of the committee overseeing the ceasefire with Israel.

The Lebanese presidency stated that this decision followed confirmation of Israeli approval for a non-military member in the Lebanese technical-military delegation. Consultations were held with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam before Karam’s appointment as head of the Lebanese delegation.

The committee, responsible for monitoring the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, is scheduled to convene in Naqoura, southern Lebanon. U.S. representative Morgan Ortagus is expected to participate in the discussions.

Analysts suggest the move could be a step toward drawing Lebanon into negotiations with Israel. Yuri Resnick, a member of Israel’s internal security council, will represent Israel at the meeting.
