Afghanistan and Pakistan Exchange Heavy Fire Along Border After Peace Talks Fail

Following the breakdown of peace talks in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan exchanged heavy fire along their shared border on Friday, according to officials from both South Asian nations.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, heavy fire was exchanged between Afghanistan and Pakistan along their shared border on Friday, following the collapse of peace talks in the Saudi Arabian capital.

So far, there have been no reported casualties from the border clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman for Afghanistan, stated that Pakistani forces attacked the Spin Boldak area in Kandahar province. Conversely, the Pakistani Prime Minister’s spokesperson accused Afghan forces of “unprovoked firing” at the Chaman border.

Musharraf Zaidi, a spokesman for the Pakistani government, said in a statement that Pakistan is closely monitoring the regional situation and is committed to protecting its territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens.

This exchange of fire occurred two days after the latest round of peace talks between the two neighbors in South Asia concluded.

Last week’s negotiations were part of a series of meetings mediated by Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, following border clashes in October.

The October clashes resulted in dozens of fatalities and represented the worst border violence since the Taliban assumed power in Afghanistan in 2021. Pakistan seeks control of the activities of Tehrik-i-Taliban and other terrorist groups by the Afghan Taliban, but Kabul denies any connection with these groups and accuses Islamabad of interfering in its internal affairs.
