US Launches ‘Operation Eagle Eye’ in Syria, Trump Vows ‘Decisive Response’

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, President Donald Trump announced early Saturday the launch of “Operation Eagle Eye” within Syrian territory, calling it a “decisive response” to the deaths of several American military personnel in Syria.
Trump asserted the attacks aim to deprive ISIS of military capabilities and prevent threats to U.S. interests and allies. He also claimed the Syrian government supports the operation, a statement observers view as an attempt to legitimize the U.S. intervention in Syria.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Friday the new military operation responds to a recent ISIS attack in Palmyra, which Washington claims killed three American soldiers. Hegseth stated on X, formerly Twitter, that American forces initiated “Operation Eagle Eye” to destroy ISIS infrastructure, weapons depots, and positions.
He reiterated Trump’s claims, stating that under Trump’s leadership, America would never hesitate to defend its people. Hegseth also claimed the operation resulted in the deaths of numerous ISIS members and said attacks would continue.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the extensive attacks targeted ISIS infrastructure, weapon storage facilities, and operational centers, claiming the action responds to a December 13 attack against U.S. forces and allies in Syria. https://media.mehrnews.com/d/2023/12/23/4/4601911.jpg?ts=1766144715760
The Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement affirming its continued fight against ISIS, announcing the Syrian Army would expand its operations against the group in various regions.
Analysts believe Washington instrumentalizes ISIS to legitimize its illegal presence in eastern Syria and the country’s oil-rich regions. They argue “Operation Eagle Eye” is less about countering terrorism and more about solidifying U.S. occupation and pressuring Syria to accept new security arrangements.
