India’s Rice Reserves Hit Record High, Boosting Export Potential

India’s government rice stockpiles reached a record 57.57 million tons by December 1, significantly exceeding targets and strengthening its position as the world’s top rice exporter against competitors like Thailand, Vietnam, and Pakistan.

According to the Economic Desk of Webangah News Agency, India’s rice reserves have surged to unprecedented levels, with government stockpiles of unmilled rice hitting 57.57 million tons by December 1 – far surpassing the official target of 7.61 million tons set for January 1. This substantial inventory positions the world’s largest rice exporter to significantly increase shipments and pressure competitors in global markets.

Official data revealed wheat reserves also grew substantially, reaching 29.14 million tons by December 1 compared to 20.6 million tons during the same period last year. India, which accounts for approximately 40% of global rice exports, removed its final export restrictions on the grain in March of this year.

Rice exports from India showed remarkable growth, increasing 37% year-over-year to reach 18.49 million tons during the first ten months of 2025. The Rice Exporters Association projects India’s rice exports will grow by about 25% in 2025 compared to last year, potentially reaching a record 22.5 million tons.
