Venezuelan Opposition Leader Names Gonzalez as Maduro’s Successor Amid Political Turmoil

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Maria Machado, the leader of Venezuela‘s opposition, announced in a statement that the United States has fulfilled its promise to enforce the law by recognizing Edmundo Gonzalez as the legitimate successor to Nicolas Maduro. Machado emphasized that Gonzalez must assume his legal responsibilities after Maduro defied calls for a negotiated resolution.
Gonzalez, who ran against Maduro in the 2024 presidential election, is regarded by opposition forces as the lawful president, with Maduro accused of electoral fraud. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that no decision has been made regarding Venezuela’s future following Maduro’s arrest, though various leadership options, including Machado, remain under consideration.
In response, Venezuela’s Attorney General, Tarek Saab, condemned Maduro’s detention and demanded his immediate release, holding the U.S. government accountable for the safety of Maduro and his wife. Saab urged Venezuelan officials to document alleged human rights violations by U.S. forces and called on the United Nations and human rights organizations to intervene.
Several nations have denounced Maduro’s arrest as a violation of the U.N. Charter, escalating tensions in the ongoing political crisis.
