OpenAI Partners with Samsung and SK Hynix to Launch New Data Centers in South Korea

According to the Economic Desk of Webangah News Agency, Bae Kyung-hoon, South Korea’s Minister of Science and ICT, announced during a parliamentary session on Wednesday that OpenAI, in collaboration with domestic giants Samsung and SK Hynix, is moving forward with plans to establish significant data center infrastructure. Construction is slated to commence in March.
This latest confirmation reinforces details previously disclosed by the South Korean government in October. At that time, it was revealed that the US-based artificial intelligence startup intended to partner with South Korean firms to build two distinct data centers. These initial facilities are expected to boast an aggregate capacity of 20 megawatts.
Further expanding the partnership landscape, SK Telecom has also indicated ongoing discussions with OpenAI concerning the development of an additional data center location in the southwestern region of South Korea. While the agreement for the initial two centers appears firm, the exact commencement date for construction on the SK Telecom facility remains under review, according to reports from Reuters.
