UNHCR Reviews Status of Afghan Migrants in Pakistan with Taliban Envoy

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a high-level delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) convened with Sardar Ahmad Shakib, the ambassador for the caretaker Afghan government in Islamabad. The UNHCR delegation was headed by Philippa Candler, the organization’s chief in Pakistan, during their discussion regarding Afghan migrants.
The core focus of the bilateral meeting involved a comprehensive review and exchange of views concerning the status of Afghan immigrants remaining in Pakistan, including Afghan students and other citizens of Afghanistan currently residing there. Ambassador Shakib expressed gratitude to the UNHCR for its diligent monitoring of the refugees’ conditions and its efforts in relaying their status reports to the global community.
However, the ambassador also stressed that the assistance provided thus far has proven insufficient to meet the totality of the needs faced by the refugee population. “Although the aid is limited, even this level of attention toward the Afghan refugees is appreciated,” Shakib noted.
In response, Philippa Candler acknowledged the fiscal constraints currently impacting UNHCR but affirmed the agency’s unwavering commitment to providing the maximum possible support to Afghan migrants despite these existing challenges. Concluding the consultation, both parties affirmed their dedication to maintaining close collaboration and strengthening coordination regarding support efforts for both refugees and those undertaking voluntary returns.
