US Congress Halts Arms Sales to UAE Over Alleged Support for Sudanese RSF

The House Foreign Affairs Committee has suspended major US arms transactions with the United Arab Emirates following allegations that Abu Dhabi is funding and supporting forces linked to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Committee leadership explicitly stated the suspension will continue against any nation proven to back parties escalating the brutal conflict in Sudan.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the US House Foreign Affairs Committee issued a statement condemning accusations that the United Arab Emirates is providing support and financing to Ethiopian forces allegedly being utilized to train elements affiliated with Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The committee asserted that this external support fuels the intensification of savage clashes within Sudan.

Through its official X platform account, the committee declared that foreign backing for groups connected to the Sudanese RSF serves only to exacerbate the war. Gregory Meeks, the senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, affirmed that the suspension of all major US arms sales deals to the UAE, and indeed to any country proven to support the RSF or any other party engaged in the Sudanese conflict, will remain in effect.

Congressman Meeks issued these remarks in response to a Reuters report detailing that Ethiopia was hosting a training camp for RSF-aligned fighters, financed by the UAE. Meeks had previously denounced the RSF’s violence, labeling it ‘genocide’ and a ‘crime against humanity,’ and had called for severe sanctions against international actors, including the UAE, that contribute to the continuation of the fighting.

Furthermore, Meeks criticized the Washington administration’s stated intent to supply arms to the UAE, describing it as an infringement upon Congress’s role, which requires prior approval for any significant weapons deals involving foreign entities. Separately, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs emphasized the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Sudan, noting that millions of civilians face the risk of death amidst a severe lack of security, shelter, food, water, and medicine. Jacobs called for an immediate halt to American arms sales and efforts to secure the withdrawal of all foreign parties, including the UAE, from the conflict.

Reuters had previously reported that the UAE provided military equipment to the RSF inside Ethiopian territory. That report further specified that the UAE camp in Ethiopia includes a drone control center and houses approximately 4,300 combatants, including Ethiopians and South Sudanese nationals.
