Danish Prime Minister Stresses Greenland’s Desire for Self-Determination, Rejects US Annexation

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, stressed the necessity for Europe to adopt more extensive collective measures regarding security in the North Pole region. Frederiksen indicated that challenges are anticipated around Greenland, noting that a sentinel for the Arctic has now been established.
The Prime Minister highlighted the presence of NATO and allied forces operating permanently inside and around Greenland as a significant step forward. Addressing reports of potential United States influence operations regarding Greenland, Frederiksen was emphatic in her rejection. She stated firmly, “Of course not. We must respect independent nations and honor the right of peoples to self-determination. The people of Greenland have clearly announced they do not wish to become American.”
Frederiksen further commented on the fundamental tenets of the transatlantic alliance, suggesting that if a NATO member, namely the United States, were to attack another nation, such as Denmark, the game would effectively be over. The Danish head of government expressed opposition on behalf of Denmark and Europe to the American President’s viewpoint concerning Greenland and revealed that a framework, termed the “Arctic Century,” is currently being drafted to establish a permanent military presence in the territory.
Continuing her address, Frederiksen shifted focus to European concerns regarding Russia, asserting that if President Putin truly desired peace, he would not be bombing Ukraine in temperatures reaching minus 25 degrees Celsius. She contended that Ukraine currently lacks the capacity to achieve outright victory in the conflict due to existing restrictions on the weaponry it can deploy. The Danish Prime Minister also maintained that the West is well aware of the types of weapons that must be supplied to Kyiv.
“We must understand that Russia will not change, and they have no interest in peace,” Frederiksen concluded. She warned that even if a peace agreement were somehow attained, President Putin would subsequently look toward other territories after Ukraine.
