Afghanistan Barred From UN Voting for Third Consecutive Year Over Unpaid Dues

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) reported that Afghanistan has been deprived of its voting rights in the United Nations General Assembly for the third consecutive year. This stems from the failure to allocate the seat to the interim government and the non-payment of annual membership dues.
The United Nations comprises representatives from 193 member states, with each nation holding an equal vote regardless of its military or economic power. According to the organization’s financial regulations, countries whose membership fee arrears surpass a specified threshold temporarily lose their voting rights in the General Assembly.
Afghanistan, a member of this international body since 1946, is now subject to this restriction due to the non-payment of its annual membership fees, estimated at approximately $200,000. Furthermore, following the collapse of the Ashraf Ghani government in 2021, Afghanistan’s seat at the UN has yet to be officially assigned to the Taliban administration.
