Hezbollah Drones Expose Israeli Defense Weaknesses, New York Times Reports

Hezbollah’s increasing use of advanced drones has exposed significant vulnerabilities in Israel’s defense systems, leading to daily attacks on military equipment and personnel, according to The New York Times.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, recent reports from The New York Times, citing Al Jazeera and Mehr News Agency, reveal that Hezbollah has been employing drones in a series of direct assaults targeting Israeli armored personnel carriers, tanks, and air defense systems in recent weeks. The Israeli military has acknowledged that these attacks have become a near-daily occurrence, resulting in the casualties of several soldiers.

The newspaper highlights that the impact of these drone strikes extends beyond military damage, undermining the perceived technological superiority of the Israeli regime. This development has fueled growing concerns among Israeli forces stationed in southern Lebanon.

Citing Israeli officials, The New York Times reports that military officers had expressed warnings early in 2024 regarding Hezbollah’s potential adoption of fiber-optic drones, a technology that gained prominence during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Unlike conventional drones reliant on radio signals, these fiber-optic variants are controlled via thin optical fibers that unfurl during flight, rendering them largely immune to electronic jamming methods employed by the Israeli regime.

Despite these warnings, the newspaper contends that the Israeli military has not implemented adequate measures to counter this evolving threat. Even as daily attacks escalated in April, basic defensive measures observed in Ukraine, such as the installation of protective netting on static positions and military vehicles, were not widely adopted.

Guy Hazut, a retired general who has participated in military learning processes in past years, stated that the Israeli security establishment was aware of the risk but did not address it with the necessary seriousness.

The New York Times also noted that Hezbollah has been gradually resuming military actions against the Israeli regime since 2014. Following the commencement of the US and Israeli regime’s war against Iran in late February, the group has intensified its missile and drone attacks against Israel.
