German Chancellor: Russia Planned Drone Attack on Leipzig Airport for Months

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced in the German parliament on Wednesday that a failed drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport had been planned in Russia for several months and was specifically aimed at Germany. Merz stated, “This attack was planned for months in Russia and specifically targeted Germany, and it was only by sheer luck that extensive material damage and harm to people were prevented.”

The German government had previously announced on September 1st that it had concluded Russia was responsible for the failed drone attack on the airport the previous month. In response, Berlin ordered, among other measures, the closure of a Russian consulate and a Russian cultural center.

Moscow has denied these accusations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on September 6th called Western claims about Russia’s role in the incident baseless, stating that such accusations could be “the beginning of a real war.”

Merz’s new statements come as the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) achieved a significant victory in the state elections of Saxony-Anhalt, a party advocating for closer relations with Moscow.
