German Protesters Block Hamburg University Entrances Over Military Spending

Demonstrators in Hamburg blocked university building entrances on Monday to protest the prioritization of military budgets over education funding, as civil unrest over government spending continues to grow across Germany.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a group of protesters used construction barriers and garbage bins on Monday to block the entrances of a building at the University of Hamburg, restricting access for students and staff.

The German Press Agency (DPA) reported that the incident occurred in front of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg. Meanwhile, local police confirmed the formation of three separate rallies across the city, with educational issues serving as a central focus for the demonstrations.

A protesting activist stated that the closure of the faculty building was carried out in response to increased state funding allocated to the military-industrial sector at the expense of education. The activist pointed out that under current conditions, one out of every every three euros is directed toward the defense industry.

Participants in the demonstration carried English-language placards demanding the liberation of oppressed individuals, boycotts, and resistance, while chanting slogans, some of which targeted the police force.

One attendee explained that the group consisted of university students who gathered to support the Gen-Z-regelt (Gen Z Takes Responsibility) movement, although the direct planning of the event was not managed by the group itself.

This protest unfolded following massive demonstrations on Saturday, during which more than 100,000 people marched across over 30 German cities to protest cuts to education and social services, as well as the potential reinstatement of compulsory military service.
