The heads of the countries of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger stated that the ECOWAS organization, instead of helping their countries to fight terrorism, has only worsened the situation in these countries with its sanctions.
The statement also stated that the reason for the three countries’ decision to leave ECOWAS was “the deviation of this organization from the ideals on which it was founded”.
The military governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger (countries that are founding members of ECOWAS since its establishment in 1975) expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current path taken by this organization.
