Navalny received a suspended prison sentence in 2013 for what he said was leading an embezzlement ring in the sale of $500,000 worth of timber at a state-owned company. Despite this, he was allowed to run in the 2013 Moscow mayoral election. In that election, he left the result to Sergey Sobyanin.
December 2014, he received another suspended sentence for embezzlement. At this time, Navalny received the attention of the West, and the European Human Rights Council claimed shortly after that the verdicts issued against him were politically motivated. In December 2016, he registered for the presidential election and planned to compete with Putin, but the Central Election Commission of Russia did not approve his candidacy due to his criminal record.
August 2020 Navalny was hospitalized. Western media claimed that he was poisoned by Novichok nerve gas. He went to Berlin and was treated there. He returned to Russia in January 2021, where he was immediately arrested.
In February 2021, his suspended sentences were changed to imprisonment for two and a half years, and the Russian government identified and dissolved the institutions under his control as extremist institutions. In March 2022, Navalny was sentenced to another 9 years in prison for embezzlement and contempt of court. He was then sentenced in August 2023 to serve a further 19 years for extremism, meaning he would have been in prison until December 2038.
