Assange appealed against his extradition order at the High Court in London

The founder of WikiLeaks, who is in prison in England, appealed to the London High Court regarding his extradition order to Washington.

The London High Court is going to hear the appeal of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, against his extradition order from England to America.

According to the report of the British news agency, the founder of WikiLeaks is wanted for an alleged conspiracy to obtain and disclose information related to the national defense of the United States after the release of hundreds of thousands of leaked documents related to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in the United States.

In a ruling handed down in January 2021, then-Judge Vanessa Breitzer said Assange should not be extradited to the U.S. because of the real danger and extreme pressure to commit suicide, while she ruled against the 52-year-old on all counts. He issued another verdict.

US officials later filed a successful appeal against the decision, paving the way for Assange’s extradition. Now that Assange is in Belmarsh prison in southeast London, his lawyers are asking the London High Court to give a green light to the rejection of the extradition case.

A two-day hearing is now scheduled to begin on Tuesday, which is expected to be Assange’s last chance to appeal to the English court. Stella Assange, the wife of the WikiLeaks founder, said in a press conference last week that if the appeal is unsuccessful, Assange will ask the European Court of Human Rights to issue a stay of extradition under Article 39 pending the investigation of his case.

Assange faces 18 charges over the release of classified documents through WikiLeaks, mostly the result of leaks by Chelsea Manning, a former US military intelligence analyst. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison, but was released after President Barack Obama commuted his sentence in 2017. The founder of WikiLeaks will face a total of 175 years in prison if convicted. He has been detained in England since 2019.
