Serbian President: World leaders are no longer working for peace

After attending the annual security conference in Munich, the Serbian president said that the international community is no longer interested in ending the conflict.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in an interview with TASS published on Tuesday that the international community is no longer interested in ending conflicts and instead sees peace as an “unwanted” ideal.

His remarks came after the annual Munich Security Conference last week, where senior officials and heads of state from around the world gathered in the German city to discuss international security issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.

Vucic noted that he has attended the forum many times and used the opportunity to gauge “the way the Western world thinks” and its willingness to listen to different opinions, including smaller countries.

This year, however, Vucic said he had heard no innovative proposals to resolve the conflict, describing conference attendees as “football fans”. Serbia’s president said he has come to the conclusion that the word “peace” seems to have become “unloved and unwanted” around the world.

At the same time, he argued that despite changes in world politics, everything possible should be done to preserve freedom and the right to make independent decisions in the interests of the people.

Vucic also told TASS that Serbia intends to continue its policy of resisting Western pressure to impose sanctions on Moscow, arguing that it would be “unfair” to the Russian people, whom he described as friends of the Serbs. will be”.

Vucic noted that Belgrade has officially condemned Moscow’s military operation against Ukraine, although Serbia is the only Eastern European country – apart from Belarus – that has not imposed sanctions over the Ukraine conflict. Vucic admitted that he did not know how long he could resist Western pressure, but stressed that his country would defend its position as long as possible.
