60 refugees drowned in the Mediterranean Sea
A ship carrying refugees, which was traveling from Libya to Italy, has sunk in the Mediterranean Sea and it is feared that 60 people on board have drowned. |
Reports indicate that a ship carrying refugees that set off from Libya 7 days ago and was on the way to the coast of Italy, had a problem on the way and finally sank.
According to Reuters, the ship’s engine broke down after 3 days and the refugees were stranded in the water for days without food or water.
Survivors say that at least 60 people were killed, at least one of whom was a child.
So far, 113 people have been rescued with a wooden boat and 88 people with a plastic boat. Also, rescue groups announced that they rescued 25 people while they were in very bad conditions.
It should be said, the Central Mediterranean is one of the deadliest routes that asylum seekers choose to migrate. According to the report of the United Nations Migration Agency, last year, approximately 2,500 migrants died or disappeared trying to cross this route.
