Treasury Secretary Trump offered to buy Tik Tok
The Treasury Secretary of the Trump administration announced the formation of an investor group to buy Tik Tok. |
Steven Mnuchin, the former US Treasury Secretary under Trump and Hollywood producer, said he was forming an investor group to buy Tik Tok, although there was no clear indication that he would actually be able to meet Tik Tok officials and the parent company. ByteDance deals to buy this popular app.
Mnuchin’s comments come a day after the US House of Representatives quickly passed a bill to effectively ban TikTok unless China-based ByteDance sells its ownership stake. This bill needs the signature of the President of the United States and the Senate for final approval. While Biden has said that he will sign this bill and it will become law.
Mnuchin said in this regard: I think this law should be passed and I think Tik Tok should be sold. This is a great business and I will form a group to buy Tik Tok. He added: “This should be available to American companies. There is no way the Chinese would allow an American company to own something like this in China.”
Mnuchin was a prolific film tycoon, with credits on Mad Max: Fury Road and American Sniper before being confirmed as Treasury secretary in the Trump administration in 2017.
Tiktok representatives have not reacted to these statements so far.
Even if the US enacts a law forcing Tik Tok to sell or become illegal, it will likely face legal challenges.
