Romania is building the largest NATO base in Europe

Romania is renovating an air base 130 kilometers from the Ukrainian border with the aim of strengthening NATO's eastern flank.

Romania has begun work on renovating an air base that will become the largest NATO installation in Europe. This base is located near the city of Constanta in the Black Sea and about 130 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

According to Euronews, when the development of the 57th Air Force Base of the Romanian Air Force Mihail Kogalnicano is completed, it will be able to permanently host about 10,000 NATO soldiers and their family members.

Euronews, referring to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, wrote: “In the new geopolitical conditions, the expansion of NATO’s eastern wing base will strengthen.”

The sprawling project, which will cost Bucharest 2.5 billion euros ($2.7 billion), includes a new runway, hangars, fuel depots and ammunition depots. This base will also have personnel accommodation, schools, kindergartens, shops and even a hospital.

The center is located at Mikhail Kogalnica International Airport near the port city of Constanta on the Black Sea. Currently, 5,000 NATO soldiers, mostly Americans, are stationed in this facility.
