The solution of the mayor of a remote Italian island to get rid of the problem of the increase in the population of goats
The local mayor of a remote Italian island full of goats has offered to give them away. |
Ricardo Gollo, the mayor of the remote Italian island of Alicodi, has announced that due to the increase in the population of goats on this island, he will give them away for free. After this idea was proposed, the population of goats became six times the population of 100 people on Alikodi Island.
People who want to adopt goats should submit their requests by April 10.
Goats have become a problem on the slopes of Alicodi Island, in the windy archipelago north of Sicily, due to damage to gardens and grounds, experts say.
This animal species has lived in Alikodi for many years and before that they were scattered in the mountains and rugged rocks of the volcanic island. But with the increase in population, they have started to attack residential areas, and according to reports, in addition to destroying gardens, they have also torn down parts of walls and even entered people’s homes.
Goats are animals that eat leaves and fruits that grow high on trees and plants – prone to destruction of vegetation if not cared for.
He told the Guardian: “There is a farmer on the island of Volcano who wants to take several goats to produce ricotta cheese, which is very popular.”
Vulcano – along with Alicodi – is one of the seven islands that make up the Bodi archipelago and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
