In late March last year, Ilham Aliyev announced that Baku is closer than ever to peace with the neighboring country, Armenia. At the opening ceremony of the 11th Baku World Forum with the focus of “revival of a divided world”, Aliyev said: We are closer to peace with Armenia now than ever before. Azerbaijan is ready to continue peace talks with Yerevan because the time has come to end instability in the region.
Baku World Assembly has been held since 2013. One of the initiators of this forum is the “Madrid Club”, which brings together more than 80 former presidents and prime ministers from 56 countries.
Last year, Yerevan and Baku started negotiations for peace in the future with the mediation of Russia, the European Union and the United States. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at the end of May this year that Yerevan is ready to recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the borders of the former Soviet Union, including Nagorno-Karabakh.
Despite the suspension of negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the two countries continued to work on the text of the peace agreement. After the meeting between Aliyev and Pashinyan on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, it was decided to resume negotiations.
