Yonhap reported that it was the first time photos were taken of Yoon Suk-yeol in the defendant’s seat. He arrived at Seoul Central District Court wearing a black suit and red tie, entering the courthouse from an underground parking lot amid camera flashes from photographers.
He is accused of leading a rebellion during his short-lived declaration of martial law on December 3, 2023. During the incident, then-president Yoon attempted to deploy troops to the National Assembly building in an effort to prevent lawmakers from voting to overturn martial law.
As proceedings began, the presiding judge announced that media outlets would be permitted to photograph and film parts of the trial—an exception after filming had been banned during the first hearing.
Yoon was removed from office on April 4 after South Korea’s Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment. If convicted of rebellion, he could face life imprisonment or even execution. He has denied all charges, maintaining that imposing martial law does not constitute rebellion.
