This ​attack occurred as Nigeria claims to ‌have long been combating assaults by armed and ​terrorist groups, including ⁢ Boko Haram and the⁤ Islamic ‍State’s⁣ West Africa⁢ Province (ISWAP).‍

Kidnapping for ​ransom remains prevalent across various regions of Nigeria, ​especially in the north—despite kidnapping ⁤being punishable by death. Armed ⁢groups frequently ⁣target villages, schools, and travelers to⁤ extort payments. Meanwhile, ‌the Nigerian government has banned ‍ransom payments to​ armed groups in an effort to curb this escalating trend.
