China: Activation of ‘Snapback’ Mechanism Is Unacceptable
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera,China’s representative at the Security Council stated: “Iran’s efforts must be recognized, and sanctions should be suspended for another period.”
He added, “We must focus on resolving Iran’s nuclear issue through political means and create the conditions for that. The United States should facilitate negotiations with Iran. In our view, reactivating snapback will escalate conflicts and will not solve the problem.”
The Chinese envoy said,”Activating snapback is unacceptable; it does not foster trust and will increase tensions. China always supports peaceful and diplomatic solutions and believes we must not return to a cycle of sanctions. Iran has consistently declared its nuclear program is peaceful and has cooperated with the agency despite attacks by Israel and the United States.”
Following the failure to pass a resolution to continue lifting sanctions on Iran in the Security Council, China’s representative noted that U.S. attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities have undermined negotiation efforts.
He stated, “It was the United States that withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, carried out military attacks against iran, and halted progress in negotiations. Pressure must end, while Iran should emphasize its commitment to peaceful nuclear activities. The country has shown readiness to cooperate.”
