Pakistan: Sanctions on Iran Could Complicate Situation Further
According too the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Pakistan’s representative at today’s security Council meeting on Iran sanctions stated that triggering the snapback mechanism and reimposing United Nations sanctions could complicate matters, harden positions, and move us away from peacefully resolving the issue.
The representative added that the current situation requires increased engagement rather than rushed sanctions. For this reason, Pakistan supported a six-month technical extension of Resolution 2231 to allow all parties a realistic and constructive approach to create space for political dialog and negotiations.
He stressed that all concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through negotiation and diplomacy. Adequate time has not been given for diplomacy concerning Iran’s nuclear program. More time must be allowed to reach a new agreement. A solution must address all JCPOA parties’ concerns with commitments upheld by everyone, not just one side.
the UN Security Council held this meeting to discuss the resolution on extending the suspension of sanctions against Iran ahead of the expiration of the 30-day snapback process deadline.
An al Mayadeen reporter reported that nine Security Council members voted against extending UN sanctions relief on Iran. Only four members approved it, while two abstained.
