EU and US Clash Over Trump Gaza Peace Plan Framework

Significant diplomatic friction between the European Union and the US administration surfaced publicly at the Munich Security Conference regarding the structure and mandate of the proposed ‘Peace Council’ concerning the future of the Gaza Strip. Key EU officials openly criticized the initiative, viewing it as an effort to bypass established international mechanisms.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, The Guardian newspaper has detailed serious disagreements between the European Union and the United States government concerning the future of the Gaza Strip and the so-called ‘Peace Council’ framework. These disputes became public during the opening days of the Munich Security Conference.

Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, stated during the conference that the council established by President Donald Trump was merely a personal instrument intended to evade accountability toward the Palestinian people or the United Nations. Borrell emphasized that the primary objective of UN resolutions concerning the formation of a peace council was to aid the Gaza Strip, arguing this goal has been distorted because the charter of this new body makes no reference to Gaza or the United Nations.

The Spanish Foreign Minister also expressed discontent over Europe being excluded from the activation process of this council, stressing the efforts by President Trump to exceed the authority granted to the proposed body.

The newspaper reported that this marks the first time disagreements surrounding the Trump Gaza plan have become this publicly pronounced before the council’s inaugural meeting is scheduled to take place in the United States. In response to Borrell’s remarks, U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, urged against doubting the council’s legitimacy. Waltz pointed to the dissatisfaction felt by several nations regarding the channeling of billions of dollars designated for Gaza’s reconstruction through the United Nations system.

These public exchanges occur amid widespread criticism regarding the ambiguity of the council’s mission, particularly as the Israeli regime continues its aggression against the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, alongside the expansion of illegal settlements by the regime.
