IAEA Chief: Iran Nuclear Case Requires Political Resolution, Urges Resumed Inspections

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi stated that Iran’s nuclear program must be resolved through a political pathway and reiterated the necessity of resuming inspections of Iranian nuclear sites as a prerequisite for any agreement.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has asserted that the Iranian nuclear file necessitates a political resolution. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Grossi maintained that the resumption of inspections at Iran’s nuclear facilities is an indispensable condition before any agreement can be reached.

Grossi, without acknowledging Iran’s extensive cooperation with the agency, further claimed that over the past eight months, the IAEA has been unable to investigate declared Iranian uranium stockpiles. He suggested that the agency assumes Iran’s nuclear materials remain in their original locations from the commencement of the issues, a point that Tehran has reportedly confirmed.

The IAEA chief reiterated that a diplomatic solution between the United States and Iran is the appropriate approach to the nuclear issue. He indicated that negotiations between the two parties are nearing an agreement, despite ongoing discussions on key points. Grossi clarified during a press conference that while the IAEA is not directly involved in the Washington-Tehran negotiations, it is closely monitoring developments, observing signs that both sides are closer to a potential deal concerning Iran’s nuclear program.

He asserted that Iran is legally obligated to inform the IAEA of its nuclear activities under all circumstances. Grossi also proposed that the optimal course of action post-agreement would be the removal or reduction of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpiles. Concurrently, Grossi conceded that military action cannot definitively end Iran’s nuclear program.
