Satellite Imagery Reveals Damage to Israel’s Ramat David Airbase Following Iranian Missile Strikes

New satellite images indicate structural changes at the Ramat David airbase, a key component of Israel’s Air Force in the northern occupied territories, following recent Iranian missile attacks. The alterations suggest damage to facilities within the base, drawing renewed attention to the escalating tensions.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, new satellite data, analyzed from sources including Al Jazeera and Mehr News Agency, highlights structural changes at the Ramat David airbase, located southeast of Haifa. This significant Israeli Air Force installation in the northern occupied territories has once again become a focal point amidst the recent exchange of missile attacks between Iran and the Israeli regime.

Satellite imagery, comparing images captured by the European Sentinel-2 satellite on June 5 and June 8 of the current year, reveals localized alterations around facilities believed to be aircraft hangars or service buildings within the base. While this area appeared intact in the June 5 image, the June 8 imagery shows variations in color and radar/optical reflectivity within the targeted zone, indicating signs of destruction occurring within a three-day period.

Some Israeli media outlets, circumventing their military’s censorship, have acknowledged that analyses of satellite imagery suggest a hangar at the base may have been damaged during Iranian missile attacks. According to these reports, one of the two affected areas appears to have been used for support and equipment, while the other served as a refueling and service point for F-35 fighter jets.

The newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth published these images, explaining that the base houses five aircraft squadrons, including F-16 fighter jets and drones. It has been a frequent target of Hezbollah attacks during the conflict due to its proximity to the Lebanese border, approximately 50 kilometers away. The newspaper noted that the publication of this news was approved by Israeli military censorship.

These images emerge at a time of restrictions on access to high-resolution satellite imagery in several parts of the Middle East, limiting the ability to independently document damage within Israel and other areas experiencing military escalation. Previously, in July 2024, an Iranian-made reconnaissance drone, the ‘Hudhud,’ belonging to Hezbollah, reportedly penetrated all defense systems of the base. Hezbollah at the time released images they claimed documented the airbase’s command center, Iron Dome missile defense systems, communication systems, parking areas, maintenance and repair sections, officer living quarters, and other affiliated facilities.

According to Hezbollah, the base is unique in the northern occupied territories, hosting a range of specialized aerial missions. It includes fighter jets, military transport and rescue helicopters, maritime reconnaissance helicopters, and offensive electronic warfare systems.

Location and Infrastructure

Ramat David is one of the most critical military bases in the occupied territories, established by Britain in 1942 in northern Palestine. It is one of Israel’s three primary airbases and the largest military installation in the northern sector. Ramat David is equipped to conduct diverse missions for the Israeli Air Force, including surveillance, reconnaissance, interception, troop deployment, and offensive operations.

The base is situated in a low-lying area, approximately 55 meters above sea level, and is encircled by hills and elevations on all sides, serving as natural defensive barriers that protect it from low-altitude attacks by warplanes. The Ramat David airbase covers an area of 10.5 square kilometers and features three runways, two of which are approximately 2,400 meters long, and the third is about 2,600 meters long.

The base also includes platforms for launching spy drones and underground hangars designed to protect aircraft from missile attacks and prevent precise targeting. Ramat David also houses specialized training camps, a flight school, and additional facilities such as sports fields and a marketplace. Adjacent to the main base, at a distance of 650 meters, lies a residential village with defensive fortifications. This settlement comprises a residential complex with approximately 1,700 housing units for base officers, personnel, and their families, equipped with amenities including sports facilities, schools, shops, and a hospital.
