The Russian Ministry of Defense has announced the successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The missile, launched from the Plesetsk space launch facility in the Arkhangelsk region, successfully traversed its trajectory to the Kura training ground on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East. The ministry stated that all assigned tasks were fully completed, validating the missile’s performance and flight characteristics.

Details regarding the specific type of ammunition fired were not disclosed, with the ministry only indicating it was a mobile solid-fuel launch system. This follows a successful test in May of Russia’s RS-28 Sarmat ICBM, described as its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile. The Sarmat is believed to be capable of carrying up to ten heavy warheads with multiple re-entry capabilities.

General Sergey Karakayev, commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, previously stated that the Russian military is scheduled to equip its first missile regiment with this new weapon system by the end of the year. Russian President Vladimir Putin has characterized the Sarmat as the world’s most powerful missile system, capable of carrying a payload four times larger than any Western missile, with a range exceeding 35,000 kilometers and high accuracy.

President Putin indicated that Moscow initiated its missile development program focusing on circumventing missile defenses after the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2022. The Russian President stated, “We were forced to think about guaranteeing our strategic security in a new reality.” He added that Moscow’s actions were aimed at “maintaining the strategic balance of power.”
