UN Chief Cautions on ‘Smoldering Ceasefire’ Amidst Escalating Regional Tensions

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has described the ceasefire situation in West Asia as ‘more like a smoldering ceasefire,’ warning against underestimating the risks of such a fragile state as tensions escalate.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the ceasefire in West Asia is “more like a smoldering ceasefire.” These remarks were published on CNN, citing data from Mehr News Agency. Guterres issued his statement without condemning the illegal aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iranian territory, which he noted contravenes international law.

The UN Secretary-General elaborated on his assessment via his personal page on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “This week we have witnessed more extensive attacks and a worsening of the situation in a place where the ceasefire is more like a smoldering ceasefire.”

António Guterres further added, “We must not underestimate the dangers of a smoldering ceasefire.”

In a measured response, he urged all parties to “strive for a diplomatic agreement,” asserting, “There should be no more excuses.”
