UK Prime Minister Discusses Iran Deal Progress with US President Trump

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a phone call with United States President Donald Trump to discuss ongoing negotiations with Iran, expressing support for the US president’s efforts and welcoming purported progress. Both leaders also agreed on the importance of restoring freedom of navigation.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke by telephone with United States President Donald Trump on Saturday. The call focused on the ongoing discussions with Iran.

A statement released by the UK government website indicated that Prime Minister Starmer voiced his support for President Trump’s initiatives concerning the negotiations with Iran. He welcomed the claimed advancements in talks between Tehran and Washington, emphasizing the necessity of ensuring any agreement leads to lasting and stable peace.

The statement further detailed that London is prepared to support the implementation of any peace agreement and collaborate with international partners to guarantee its success. The leaders of both nations concurred that freedom of navigation must be revived to mitigate global economic impacts and agreed to maintain close communication.

This discussion follows previous claims by U.S. President Donald Trump, who asserted that an agreement with Iran was scheduled for signing on Sunday, after which the Strait of Hormuz would be open to all. Trump made unsubstantiated remarks regarding the collection of Iran’s nuclear materials, suggesting U.S. involvement once the situation stabilized, and expressed optimism for a swift resolution, while also hinting at alternative measures if progress stalled.

President Trump reiterated his assertion that his agreement with Iran would prevent the country from acquiring nuclear weapons, whether through purchase, development, or other means. He contrasted his proposed deal with the Obama administration’s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), alleging that the JCPOA paved the way for Iran to obtain nuclear weapons, whereas his agreement would achieve the opposite. Trump also claimed a significantly different and improved relationship with Iran compared to previous administrations, emphasizing that no funds would be exchanged, unlike the billions reportedly paid by the Obama administration to Iran.

These assertions by Trump come despite earlier statements from Ismail Bakhshai, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who indicated a high probability of a Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the U.S. being finalized in the coming days. Bakhshai clarified that there were no immediate plans for travel to Geneva or any other location within the next couple of days.
