Kurdish Leader, Trump Envoy Praise Iran-U.S. Deal Ending Hostilities

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Nechirvan Idris Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, welcomed Thomas Barrett, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump for Iraq and Syria, and his accompanying delegation on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Joshua Harris, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, was also present during the meeting.
The two sides engaged in discussions regarding U.S. relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Trump’s special envoy reiterated strong U.S. support for the new Iraqi government. Both parties also agreed on the importance of limiting the presence of arms within the Iraqi government’s control.
Furthermore, the attendees concurred on the significance of transforming the relationship between the United States and Iraq into a balanced and long-term economic partnership that effectively serves the interests of both nations.
Other key topics addressed during this diplomatic engagement included the latest regional developments, the internal situation of the Kurdistan Region, and the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad. The meeting featured praise for the agreement reached between the U.S. and Iran to end hostilities, with both sides expressing optimism that this accord will pave the way for peace and security in the region.
