Russia Warns Japan Against Pursuing Nuclear Weapons

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia‘s ambassador to Japan emphasized that Japan’s relinquishment of its non-nuclear status would be met with reciprocal reactions from other countries in the region. He added that abandoning Japan’s position as a non-nuclear state would constitute a clear violation of the country’s commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, a treaty to which Tokyo acceded as a non-nuclear state.

The Russian ambassador stated, “Such a path would dangerously threaten the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region and would naturally be met with reciprocal reactions from neighboring countries.”

It is worth noting that the Japanese government adheres to the principles of not possessing, producing, or importing nuclear weapons, in accordance with its national laws. For this reason, the United States does not station nuclear weapons at its bases in Japan, and warships equipped with nuclear weapons do not dock in Japanese ports.

Nevertheless, the necessity of reviewing these principles, or at least discussing them, has been repeatedly raised in Japanese media in recent months.
