Syrian Interim Government Head: Golan Heights Inalienable Syrian Territory

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Syrian Interim Government head, Ahmad al-Shar’, has declared that the Golan Heights are an inalienable part of Syrian territory, officially recognized by the United Nations, and are not subject to negotiation. Speaking at the Atlantic Council in New York, al-Shar’ outlined Damascus’s conditions for achieving lasting peace with the Israeli regime.

Al-Shar’ emphasized that Syria has pursued a diplomatic path and strives for sustainable peace in the region. However, he stressed that such peace can only be achieved when Syrian rights are guaranteed and occupied lands are returned. He asserted that any military presence within Syrian territory must adhere to a legal framework approved by the Syrian parliament and ensure the country’s sovereignty, adding that Syria will not require foreign military bases in the foreseeable future.

Reflecting on past negotiations with Israel, the head of the interim Syrian government noted that approximately 90 percent of an agreement was reached, but Israel ultimately withdrew. These discussions were based on Israel’s return to the 1974 borders. He further stated that if Israel desires security, it must also respect the security of others, proposing the establishment of an international committee to investigate security concerns.

These remarks come in the wake of a message from Israeli Minister of War, Yisrael Katz, to al-Shar’, reaffirming Israel’s determination to protect the Golan and Galilee regions. The Golan Heights have been under Israeli occupation since the 1967 war.
