Yellow Vests and Students Take to French Streets Amid Ongoing Protests

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Paris and several other French cities witnessed large-scale protest gatherings on Saturday. Concurrent demonstrations by high school students and Yellow Vest movement members in the streets of Paris led to initial clashes between protesters and police forces.
The main rally was scheduled to commence at 2 PM local time in Paris’s Republic Square, with various groups of protesters having gathered in different parts of the city hours earlier. Security forces in Paris and other major cities were on high alert.
Protesters are demanding action to curb the rise in living expenses, fuel, and energy prices, alongside calls for increased wages and pensions, and improvements in public services and educational conditions.
Media reports indicate that French police deployed tear gas in Paris’s Republic Square to disperse the crowd. Police forces were also reported to be inspecting individuals attempting to enter the square for the protests and confiscating some of their belongings.
In Marseille, gatherings were held as part of a nationwide mobilization against social conditions. Some protesters hurled bottles and stones at the police, who responded with tear gas deployment.
Calls circulating on social media for the participation of members from previous protest movements have been met with a positive response, a development that could potentially lead to a wider escalation of protests.
The Yellow Vest movement originated in 2018 in protest against fuel taxes, but its scope expanded to encompass broader dissatisfaction with rising prices and income inequality. Following President Macron’s agreement to tax cuts valued at several billion euros, the movement’s activities largely subsided.
