Portugal Joins European Wave of Protests Against Soaring Living Costs

Portuguese cities are witnessing demonstrations against the escalating cost of living, housing prices, and declining purchasing power, mirroring wider economic discontent across Europe.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, widespread protests against rising inflation have now reached Portugal, with citizens taking to the streets in various cities to voice their concerns over increased living expenses, soaring housing costs, and a diminishing purchasing power. This wave of public discontent echoes similar demonstrations occurring in other European nations.

The protests in Portugal come as similar gatherings in France have been met with a forceful response from riot police. Manuel Ribeiro, reporting for Euronews, noted that several housing advocacy groups, alongside labor unions affiliated with the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP), called for demonstrations in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra.

Under the slogan “Higher Wages, Better Pensions, Public Services; Against the Rising Cost of Living, For a New Path in Portugal,” the labor confederation is demanding a shift in the government’s economic policies. The escalating prices of essential goods and fuel, coupled with a scarcity of affordable housing, have emerged as paramount concerns for citizens across numerous European countries, compelling thousands to protest economic pressures.

A spokesperson for the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers stated on Saturday during an interview with SICN in Coimbra that the rising costs of living, housing, and fuel have made even basic grocery shopping prohibitively expensive. In Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, a march commenced around 10:30 AM from Praça da Batalha and is scheduled to conclude at Praça Dom João I, a location that has recently been the site of previous protests against the housing crisis.
