Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf Record Unprecedented 35 Maritime Incidents in October

Maritime incidents in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz surged to a record 35 cases in October, driven largely by vessels violating designated corridors amid ongoing regional conflicts.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Ali Fannish, the head of Al Mayadeen’s bureau in Tehran, reported that October witnessed an unprecedented 35 maritime incidents across the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz, marking the highest monthly figure since the onset of the war against Iran on February 28, 2026.

The report specifies that these statistics pertain to actions taken against vessels that disregarded the maritime corridor established and announced by Iran. The media official noted that the figures exclusively reflect documented and media-verified cases, suggesting the actual number of incidents could be higher.

Based on the released data, a total of 137 maritime incidents have been recorded from the beginning of the conflict through the end of October, with the 35 occurrences in October accounting for approximately 25.5 percent of the total.

A monthly breakdown of the maritime incidents indicates 29 cases in March, 10 in April, 9 in May, 7 in June, 17 in July, 13 in August, 17 in September, and 35 in October, making October’s total higher than even the figures recorded in March.

According to the Al Mayadeen bureau chief in Tehran, the epicenter of most of these incidents was located in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz—a route Tehran has repeatedly issued warnings about, designating it as hazardous and illegal due to mining operations.

Furthermore, information published by Al Mayadeen indicates that since July, roughly 75 percent of intentional operations and events within this corridor have occurred adjacent to the coastal waters of Oman.

The Al Mayadeen bureau head also highlighted the attachment of limpet mines to an oil tanker as one of the most prominent events of October, noting that news of this incident originated not from Iranian channels, but from external media reports regarding the tanker attack.

He described this event as the first of its kind in the region since 2019, viewing it as an indication of shifting tactics and a diversification of operational methods within the Strait of Hormuz.
